Governments around the world have passed measures to
prohibit the sale of incandescent light bulbs for general lighting. The aim
is to encourage use of more energy-efficient lighting alternatives, such as
compact fluorescent lamp (CFLs)
The incandescent light bulb, one of the most revered
inventions of its era will be phased off the US market beginning in 2012
under the new energy law enacted by Congress in 2007.
Although the switch will reduce electricity costs in every household in
America, many people are starting to stockpile the legendary incandescent
bulbs. Many consumers are worried about the mercury levels contained in
fluorescent lights and the potential health, safety and environmental issues
caused by mercury vapor emitted from broken lamps.
Compact fluorescent lamp (CFLs) use 75% less energy, some
consumers complain that the lighting is dimmer, doesn't come on right away
and the cost. Certainly by 2012 the cost will become lower as more of these
bulbs become more efficient.
Trivia:
The world's oldest light bulb, which has been glowing almost continuously
